Sussex, WI – February 16, 2002 – On Thursday, February 16, eighteen Oconomowoc High School students from the Introduction to Engineering class and their instructor, Mark Jappinen, visited Power Test Inc in Sussex. The purpose of the two hour visit was to provide the students with an opportunity to see how the concepts they are learning in the classroom are applied in a manufacturing environment. In addition, the students got advice from Alan Petelinsek, the president and owner of Power Test, on how to prepare themselves for a job in a progressive manufacturing company.
Upon their arrival the entire group was addressed by Alan who gave them an overview of Power Test including the products, markets served and the international scope of the business. He advised them to do well in school while also taking the time to roll up their sleeves and work with products and equipment. He concluded with the need to look and act in a highly professional and alert manner and to physically take care of themselves so they can enjoy the rewards of their hard work.
“It was a privilege to provide a real world illustration of how a well-rounded education featuring technical skills is necessary for the wide range of careers found in a global manufacturing business like ours” stated Alan. “This cooperation of business and schools is representative of the forward thinking necessary to return this region to its once dominant role in engineering and manufacturing.”
At the end of his introductory remarks the students were split into three groups and sent on a tour visiting all departments of the company and interacting with many employees along the way. Throughout the tour the students were very inquisitive about the products, the company and the kinds of skills, training and education that are needed to obtain positions within a company like Power Test. “This has been one of the best tours I’ve been on” stated Mark Jappinen. “Power Test opened up every facet of their company for the students and made us feel very welcome. Our tour guides Mr. Petelinsek, Mr. Johnson, and Mr. Eineichner did a fantastic job explaining all of the components of Power Test. The students felt very comfortable asking questions and said on the ride home how cool it was. It was great to hear all the advice they had for the students.”
Power Test has grown rapidly over the past five years and is now in need of many additional qualified new employees. As is the case with many manufacturing companies today, finding talented people with the right skills to fill these positions is very challenging. Power Test is working with school districts in northern Waukesha County to make them aware of the need for qualified applicants to fill open positions in manufacturing companies.
